You may be amused to learn that at the other end (more or less) of Honshu there is another Tamagawa Onsen - written differently though (田万川温泉 as opposed to 玉川温泉). It's much smaller and less well known than the Akita one. I've never been to it, though I have cycled fairly close to it.

Thanks for your information, Francis. I have never heard of this Tamagawa Onsen in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is located next to the border of Shimane Prefecture. Even though I am an Onsen enthusiast, there are many places I don't know. I always appreciate new information and insights. What is your favorite onsen?

In Shimane we're spoiled for choice so it sort of depends.

Arifuku onsen (有福温泉) is one of the oldest in Japan - ~1400 years old - and for a special occasion staying at Nushiya ryokan there is excellent. But it is kind of remote

Not that far away is Yunotsu (温泉津温泉) which is a lovely historic port and part of the Iwami Ginzan heritage site (and a good challenge to Google and other map sites that can get confused about how to pronounce it). It also has an excellent Sakekura (Wakabayashi Shuzo - 若林酒造 that makes Kaishun brand sake)

We often hike around Sanbesan and end up in one of the onsen there e.g. さんべ荘- that's more location than anything else though it's very pleasant and since Sanbe is a dormant volcano the water is interestingly mineral. There are a number of onsen a little further from the mountain too like Yugakae and Chihara

I recommend that people who visit Shimane from elsewhere stay at Saginoyusou (さぎの湯荘) in Yasugi because it's next door to the Adachi gardens and close to the ruins of Gassan Todajo castle which are both good to visit if you are a tourist. Saginoyusou is a very nice place to stay in its own right too. It too has an excellent nearby Sakekura - Yoshida Shuzo 吉田酒造 that makes Gassan sake

And if you want the big resort onsen experience there's Shinji Onsen in Matuse city and Tamatsukuri just outside it. That's not really my thing, but it's good if you have a group

Thanks for your additional information, Francis. I visited Shimane a couple of years ago, but it is a pity that I didn't have time to explore more. I will try them next time I have a chance.
