In August last year I was in Hokkaido (Sapporo, Otaru, Asahikawa) and it was swelteringly hot with temperatures well above 30 degrees C. Appreciate your tips for trips to elevated locations.

I am sorry that Hokkaido didn’t work out for the heat retreat for you. The altitude doesn’t work for that purpose sometimes, then we have to switch to the elevation.

I spent June in Hakodate and around. Some days were 18 degrees only. So, Hokkaido and Tohoku are good candidates for June-September in my opinion. The rest is the research of the options.

I agree, Igor. But Hokkaido is no longer a safe heat retreat. Sometimes it gets really hot in Sapporo and other areas. We should check the forecast before going there.

Agree. Jackpot. They say today in Hakodate is 30 whereas in Iwate where I am now , nice 25. Maybe scrap my idea of Hakodate summer escape, but will talk to locals more. Thanks for always useful info.

Well, there is no right answer for the weather or climate lately. I am so concerned the rise of temperature in Tohoku region. Some people say that cherry trees will not grow in Yamagata in the future due to the temperature. I hope it will not happen.
